So as my kids are getting older, I realized it was time to start getting intentional about their typing abilities, and I am so excited we found these free typing games online that make it SUPER easy to teach kids to type! Well, apparently it takes consistent practicing to be able to type well, and typing practice can be pretty boring if you are just typing out words. When I got to school, I was SHOCKED that people didn’t already know how to type. I got my first email address at 4, and remember instant messaging family from across the country at a young age. You don’t have to spend tons of money on programs or drudge through boring lessons with free typing games!) She was delighted when she won the swimming race with her fast typing.
My daughter especially loved the “swimming race” typing game, since she was unable to join her own swim team this summer due to COVID. So, it was great that my 8-year-old daughter could practice just the home row while she played. Some allow the user to choose which parts of the keyboard to practice. Kidztype also provides numerous free typing games to encourage frequent practice. With Kidztype Dance Mat Typing lesson, children see images of where the fingers should be on the keyboard, and they type with a mythological character on the screen (called the “dance mat”) to encourage them. Other kids may need a bit of prompting to become interested in typing practice. The typing test allows you to select your child’s grade and choose from a list of words to also improve your spelling. When children become more proficient, there is even a typing test for kids to see how fast they can type. There are small ads on the site, but the typing lessons themselves are clean, perfect for kids that need to just focus on learning the lessons or practicing.
